Colorectal Cancer Awareness: Get Screened and Stay Healthy

The National Cancer Institute estimates that 152,810 people in the United States were diagnosed with colon or rectal cancer in 2024, and approximately 53,010 died from the disease. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the country, but it is also one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer—especially when detected early through routine screening.

Why Colorectal Cancer Screening is Essential
Many cases of colorectal cancer begin as small, abnormal growths known as polyps in the colon or rectum. A colonoscopy is a powerful screening tool that allows doctors to detect and remove these precancerous polyps before they develop into cancer. Additionally, early-stage colorectal cancer detected through screening is much easier to treat, leading to a 91.1% five-year survival rate according to the National Cancer Institute’s SEER Program. However, survival rates decline significantly once the disease spreads beyond the colon.

Who Should Get a Colonoscopy?
Experts recommend that individuals at average risk begin colorectal cancer screening at age 45. However, those with a family history of colorectal cancer, certain genetic conditions, or lifestyle risk factors—such as a diet high in processed meats, obesity, or smoking—may need to start screening earlier. Early-onset colorectal cancer is on the rise, with more cases being diagnosed in people under 50 years old. If you’re unsure about your risk, speak with your primary care provider to determine when you should schedule your colonoscopy.

How to Lower Your Risk of Colon Cancer
While age and genetics play a role in colorectal cancer risk, lifestyle factors also significantly impact your chances of developing the disease. To reduce your risk, consider the following:

  • Eat a fiber-rich diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes
  • Limit red meat and avoid processed meats like bacon, hot dogs, and salami
  • Maintain a healthy weight and engage in regular physical activity
  • Reduce alcohol consumption and quit smoking
  • Stay up to date with your recommended colon cancer screenings
